Wilkeson Pointe Grand Opening: Gov. Hochul Unveils New Gem!

BUFFALO, N.Y. — After nearly three years of extensive renovations, Wilkeson Pointe has officially opened its doors, as announced by Governor Hochul on Friday.

In August 2022, a significant $300 million restoration initiative was unveiled for the Buffalo waterfront, with $11 million specifically allocated for improvements at Wilkeson Pointe. Renovation work commenced in September 2022, introducing a variety of enhancements such as a new outdoor seating area, safety measures for visitors, and facilities for the operations management team, including restrooms and storage.

Visitors can once again enjoy volleyball courts, along with kayak and bicycle rentals. Additionally, a new Tex-Mex restaurant, Perro & Poni, is set to open soon, promising a menu filled with tacos, light bites, frozen drinks, cocktails, and local brews.

Wilkeson Pointe has long been cherished as one of Buffalo’s premier spots for relaxation and recreation. The governor emphasized its importance, stating that the combination of the new restaurant and improved waterfront access elevates Wilkeson Pointe to an unparalleled outdoor destination, perfect for gathering with friends, taking leisurely strolls, or simply enjoying the sunset.

In June, the Great Lakes Cruise Ships selected a consulting firm to design a cruise port in the city, and now, Victory Cruise Lines, Inc. plans to include Buffalo in its cruise itineraries starting in 2027.

Buffalo's Acting Mayor, Chris Scanlon, remarked on the significance of the upgrades, highlighting how they signify a major advancement in the transformation of the city's waterfront. With improved recreational facilities, natural landscaping, and the exciting launch of Perro & Poni, this project embodies a collective vision for a vibrant, inclusive, and accessible waterfront that celebrates Buffalo's natural beauty and economic revival.

This initiative is part of the governor's 'Get Offline, Get Outside' campaign, which aims to encourage young people in New York to step away from their screens and engage with the outdoors.

Governor Hochul underscored her commitment to this cause, stating that substantial investments in swimming pools, outdoor activities, and parks are essential. The goal is to create spaces where young people can socialize, enjoy simple pleasures like hot dogs and ice cream cones, and lead healthier lifestyles.
