Gov. Hochul Unveils Wilkeson Pointe: A New Era Begins!

Buffalo, N.Y. – After nearly three years of extensive renovations, Wilkeson Pointe has officially reopened to the public, as announced by Governor Hochul on Friday.

The revitalization of the Buffalo Waterfront kicked off in August 2022, with a substantial $300 million project allocated, of which $11 million was earmarked specifically for Wilkeson Pointe. Renovations commenced in September 2023, introducing features such as an outdoor seating area, enhanced visitor safety measures, restrooms, and storage facilities for the operational team.

The park has also welcomed back volleyball courts along with kayak and bicycle rentals. Excitingly, a new Tex-Mex restaurant is set to open soon, following its announcement in March.

Perro & Poni will offer a delightful menu featuring tacos, light bites, frozen drinks, cocktails, and local craft beers.

Governor Hochul emphasized the significance of Wilkeson Pointe in the community, stating that it has been a beloved destination for relaxation and outdoor activities for over ten years. With the addition of the new restaurant and improved waterfront access, she believes it will become an even more exceptional outdoor experience.

In June, the city also saw progress in its cruise industry, with Great Lakes Cruise Ships selecting a consulting firm to develop a cruise port. Governor Hochul revealed that Victory Cruise Lines, Inc. plans to include Buffalo in their itineraries starting in 2027.

Buffalo's Acting Mayor, Chris Scanlon, highlighted the upgrades as a significant advancement in the transformation of the city's waterfront. He expressed excitement about the new recreational amenities, natural landscaping, and the eagerly anticipated Perro & Poni, framing the project as a reflection of Buffalo's vibrant and inclusive vision.

This development aligns with Governor Hochul's "Get Offline, Get Outside" initiative, aimed at encouraging New York's youth to disconnect from their screens and embrace the outdoors.

To support this initiative, Governor Hochul is investing heavily in parks, swimming pools, and outdoor activities. She envisions a space where young people can gather, enjoy a hot dog, savor ice cream, and engage in healthier, more active lifestyles.
