Discover the Perfect Buffalo Weekend with a Curator's Guide

As someone who hails from the vibrant streets of New York City, I always eagerly anticipate visits from friends and family to Buffalo. I love showing them around, introducing them to beloved local spots that reflect the rich history and culture of this city, which has truly become my home.

Kick off Day 1 with a jolt of energy at Unapologetic Coffee, located at 1375 Main St. This warm and inviting coffee shop, owned by Black women and dedicated to sustainability, fosters a welcoming atmosphere of community and culture. From there, take a short two-mile journey to the picturesque Elmwood Avenue, where leafy Victorian streets are lined with an array of shops, restaurants, cafes, and museums. Make your first stop at the Burchfield Penney Art Center at 1300 Elmwood Ave. As a curator here, I take pride in showcasing diverse exhibitions and artists, along with the captivating history of Charles Burchfield and his mesmerizing watercolor landscapes. Be sure to grab a comforting bowl of soup at the museum’s Roux Soup Bar and Cafe.

Just across the street lies the Buffalo AKG Art Museum at 1285 Elmwood. Wander through the contemporary exhibits housed in the striking new Gundlach building, a three-story glass structure. Don’t miss the chance to stroll across the curvy bridge that connects to the original 1905 gallery, where you can appreciate the historic campus and its esteemed international collection.

Step outside to discover the murals commissioned by AKG, which adorn buildings throughout the city. One highlight is the Freedom Wall, a powerful collection of portraits honoring both local and national African American pioneers, located at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and East Ferry Street in East Buffalo. Continue your journey for another two miles to the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor. Here, you can delve into the stories of musicians with ties to Buffalo, including the legendary Aretha Franklin. Explore the 1845 church established by freedom fighters and tour the historic home of the minister who played a crucial role in founding the local NAACP.

As for dinner and drinks, my go-to spot is on Connecticut Street. Indulge in a delicious milkshake cocktail, sweet potato fries, and a fried chicken sandwich, along with a variety of vegan options at Mister Sizzles, located at 346 Connecticut. Just a block away at 365 Connecticut, don't miss Southern Junction, where you can savor award-winning Indian-fusion barbecue.

Start Day 2 with a delightful cup of coffee at Golden Cup Coffee, situated at 1323 Jefferson Ave. This Black-owned establishment is nestled in a historic African American neighborhood and serves up grits that taste just like grandma used to make. Nearby, you'll find landmarks such as the Challenger Community News, which has been publishing weekly since 1963, and the Frank E. Merriweather Library. Make a stop at the Tops supermarket at 1275 Jefferson to pay tribute at a memorial site honoring those lost in the tragic events of May 14, 2022.

A little further down the road at 1382 Jefferson stands Zawadi Books, a cherished community hub named after the Swahili word for "gift," which has been serving the neighborhood for nearly five decades. Just a quick six-minute drive away is another favorite spot of mine: Fitz Books and Waffles, at 433 Ellicott St. Here, you can enjoy scrumptious Belgian-style waffles while browsing through books that unveil hidden histories and encourage us to be agents of change.

If you're up for a short drive, Niagara Falls is roughly a 30-minute trip away. Visit the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center at 825 Depot Ave, where you can learn about the courageous freedom fighters who assisted enslaved people in their quest for safety across the Canadian border. This museum serves as a poignant reminder of the significant history that surrounds us.

As the day transitions into evening, head to Buffalo’s waterfront, where the sunsets cast a mesmerizing glow over the horizon. Canalside, a charming park and promenade along the historic Erie Canal, features the Buffalo Heritage Carousel, a beautifully restored merry-go-round crafted a century ago at a now-closed local factory. To wrap up your day, unwind with dinner and drinks at the stylish Deco Lounge, located at 69 Delaware Ave. This trendy bar offers small plates and cocktails, often accompanied by live music to enhance your experience.
