A dedicated section of their menu highlights the Pod, a unique handheld pizza dough creation that has been delighting taste buds for over four decades and is proudly one of Western New York’s few trademarked foods.

Pizza lovers will relish the Wingy Dingy Pod, a tribute to Buffalo’s iconic wings, featuring breaded chicken, ricotta, mozzarella, wing sauce, and blue cheese. For vegetarians, there are delightful options like the “Tofu Torch” and the “Vegi-Try” Pods. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try the Cajun Shrimp, Texas Torch, or the “Goombah”—stuffed with sausage, cheese, peppers, and garlic? With over 20 specialty Pods available, including chicken souvlaki and a spinach-packed “Popeye,” and the option to customize your own Pod with more than 50 ingredients like pineapple, eggplant, and sunflower seeds, the possibilities are truly endless!

Searching online for the Pod might lead you to comparisons with calzones, but a closer look reveals several key differences. At Pizza Plant, the staff skillfully pinches the ends of the pizza dough to create an elongated form, a stark contrast to the typical calzone which is sealed along the side. The Pod offers various dough choices, including wheat, spinach, and garlic, while calzones usually stick to a standard white pizza dough. Plus, there’s an astonishing range of fillings available, including a “Harvest Pilgrim” special for Thanksgiving, featuring turkey, peas, corn, carrots, and gravy.

The “make your own Pod” option was one of the original items on the hand-written menu board when Pizza Plant first opened its doors in 1980. Co-owners and brothers Bob and Dan Syracuse had meticulously honed their recipe in their own kitchen prior to launching.
“We aimed to create something that was perfect for individuals,” Bob Syracuse shared. “Everything you need for a satisfying meal is right there. It’s your own personal culinary comfort zone.”

The Pod quickly gained a loyal following, prompting Bob and Dan to trademark their invention and expand their menu with unique flavors. Over the years, Pizza Plant also made history by introducing Buffalo to stuffed pizza, inspired by the Chicago classic, and was among the pioneers of craft beer in the 1990s, featuring eclectic brews long before the term “craft” was commonplace. Additionally, they took a different route in Buffalo's wing culture by opting to bake their wings rather than fry them. Today, Pizza Plant proudly operates two locations: one on Transit Road in Williamsville and another on Main Street at Canalside.
In 2022, the Syracuse brothers brought Pod City Beer Labs to the Canalside venue, crafting the perfect brews to accompany their Pods. The cozy wooden bar, exposed brick walls, and tin ceiling of the Main Street location provide an inviting atmosphere to relax after a day of waterfront adventures.
