Discover the Perfect Buffalo Weekend: A Curator's Guide

As a proud native of New York City, I always look forward to welcoming friends and family to Buffalo. There's something special about sharing the city’s rich history and vibrant culture that makes it feel like home.

Day 1 begins with a delightful start at Unapologetic Coffee, located at 1375 Main St. This Black women-owned coffee shop is dedicated to sustainability and boasts a cozy atmosphere filled with culture and community spirit. After savoring your brew, take a leisurely stroll to Elmwood Avenue, just a couple of miles away. This charming area, known for its Victorian architecture, is brimming with shops, restaurants, cafes, and museums. Make your first stop the Burchfield Penney Art Center at 1300 Elmwood Ave. As a curator here, I am proud of our diverse range of exhibitions and artists, as well as the captivating history of Charles Burchfield, whose watercolor landscapes seem to come alive. Be sure to warm up with a comforting bowl of soup from the museum’s Roux Soup Bar and Cafe.

Next, cross the street to the Buffalo AKG Art Museum at 1285 Elmwood. Here, you can wander through the latest exhibits housed in the stunning new three-story glass Gundlach building. Don’t miss the chance to travel along the curvy, windowed bridge that connects to the original 1905 gallery, where you can appreciate the historic campus and an impressive international collection.

After soaking up the art, venture outside to discover the murals commissioned by the AKG, which adorn various buildings throughout the city. Make your way to the Freedom Wall at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and East Ferry Street in East Buffalo. This powerful collection of portraits celebrates the contributions of local and national African American pioneers. From there, continue your exploration to the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, just two miles away. Here, you can delve into the stories of musicians with ties to Buffalo, such as Aretha Franklin, and visit the historic 1845 church that served as a refuge for freedom seekers, as well as the home of the minister who played a crucial role in establishing the local NAACP.

When it’s time for dinner and drinks, my go-to spot is Connecticut Street. Indulge in a milkshake cocktail, some sweet potato fries, and a fried chicken sandwich at Mister Sizzles, located at 346 Connecticut. Just down the block at 365 Connecticut, be sure to check out Southern Junction, which offers award-winning Indian-fusion barbecue.

Day 2 kicks off with a comforting cup of coffee at Golden Cup Coffee, situated at 1323 Jefferson Ave. This Black-owned establishment is located in a historic African American neighborhood and serves up grits that taste like they came straight from grandma’s kitchen. While you’re in the area, stop by notable landmarks such as the Challenger Community News, founded in 1963, and the Frank E. Merriweather Library. Don’t forget to visit the Tops supermarket at 1275 Jefferson, where you can pay your respects at a memorial site dedicated to the Buffalonians lost in the tragic events of May 14, 2022.

A short stroll down the street at 1382 Jefferson brings you to Zawadi Books, a beloved community bookstore that has been serving locals for nearly 50 years. If you're up for a short drive, don’t miss Fitz Books and Waffles at 433 Ellicott St., where you can enjoy delicious Belgian-style waffles while browsing books that inspire us to uncover hidden histories and become catalysts for change.

For those looking to explore beyond the city, Niagara Falls is just a 30-minute drive away. Visit the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center at 825 Depot Ave, where you can learn about the brave freedom fighters who assisted individuals in escaping slavery and finding safety across the border in Canada. It’s a powerful reminder of the significant history that surrounds us.

As the day transitions to evening, make your way to Buffalo’s waterfront where you can witness breathtaking sunsets. Canalside, a vibrant park and promenade alongside the historic Erie Canal, features the Buffalo Heritage Carousel, a beautifully restored merry-go-round that dates back a century to a now-closed local factory. To cap off your Buffalo adventure, unwind with dinner and drinks at Deco Lounge, located at 69 Delaware Ave. This stylish bar offers a selection of small plates and cocktails, often accompanied by live music.

The journey through Buffalo is not just about the sights; it’s about experiencing the heart and soul of the city. Enjoy your visit!
