Discover the Perfect Buffalo Weekend: Curator's Guide

As someone who hails from New York City, I always relish the opportunity to share my love for Buffalo with visiting friends and family. There’s something special about introducing them to the city's rich history and vibrant culture, which truly makes Buffalo feel like home.
Day 1 begins with a burst of energy at Unapologetic Coffee, located at 1375 Main St. This Black women-owned coffee shop, dedicated to sustainability, offers a welcoming atmosphere filled with culture and community. A short two-mile jaunt leads you to Elmwood Avenue, a picturesque Victorian neighborhood brimming with shops, restaurants, cafes, and museums. Start your exploration at the Burchfield Penney Art Center at 1300 Elmwood Ave. As a curator here, I take pride in showcasing diverse exhibitions and artists, alongside the captivating watercolor landscapes of Charles Burchfield that seem to come alive. It’s also the perfect spot to enjoy a cozy bowl of soup at the Roux Soup Bar and Cafe inside the museum.
Just across the street, immerse yourself in the art at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, 1285 Elmwood. Wander through the new exhibits housed in the striking three-story glass cube of the Gundlach building. Don’t miss the curvy windowed bridge that connects to the original 1905 gallery, where you can appreciate the historic campus and its renowned international collection.
Afterward, venture outside to discover the vibrant AKG commissioned murals adorning buildings and walls throughout the city. Make sure to visit the Freedom Wall, located at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and East Ferry Street in East Buffalo. This powerful collection of portraits celebrates the legacies of both local and national African American pioneers. Continue your journey for two more miles to the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, where you can uncover the stories of musicians with ties to Buffalo, such as Aretha Franklin. Explore the historic 1845 church built by freedom fighters and tour the house museum of the minister who played a vital role in establishing the local NAACP.
When it comes to dinner and drinks, I recommend heading to Connecticut Street. At Mister Sizzles, 346 Connecticut, indulge in a delightful milkshake cocktail, sweet potato fries, and a fried chicken sandwich, with plenty of vegan choices available. Just a block away at 365 Connecticut, don’t miss the award-winning Indian-fusion barbecue at Southern Junction.
Day 2 kicks off with a delicious morning brew at Golden Cup Coffee, 1323 Jefferson Ave. Situated in a historic African American neighborhood, this Black-owned coffee shop serves up grits that taste like a comforting family recipe. Nearby, you'll find landmarks like the Challenger Community News, which has been publishing weekly papers since 1963, and the Frank E. Merriweather Library. Make a stop at Tops supermarket at 1275 Jefferson to pay tribute at the memorial for the victims of the tragic May 14, 2022 massacre.
A short trip down the street brings you to Zawadi Books at 1382 Jefferson. Named after the Swahili word for “gift,” this community staple has been around for nearly 50 years. Just a six-minute drive away is one of my personal favorites: Fitz Books and Waffles, 433 Ellicott St. Here, you can savor Belgian-style waffles while browsing books that inspire change and uncover hidden histories.
The iconic Niagara Falls is only a 30-minute drive away, making it easy to visit the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center at 825 Depot Ave. This museum beautifully narrates the courageous stories of freedom fighters who assisted individuals in escaping slavery and finding safety in Canada. It's a poignant reminder of the profound history that surrounds us.
As the day transitions to evening, make your way to Buffalo’s waterfront, where the sunsets paint the horizon in mesmerizing hues. Canalside, a lively downtown park along the historic Erie Canal, features the Buffalo Heritage Carousel, a restored merry-go-round crafted a century ago in a now-closed local factory. To conclude your day, unwind with dinner and drinks at Deco Lounge, 69 Delaware Ave. This chic bar offers delectable small plates and cocktails, often accompanied by live music.
