1199SEIU and CWA Secure 3-Year Deal with Kaleida Health

In Buffalo, New York, two labor unions representing nearly 8,000 healthcare professionals have successfully ratified a new three-year agreement with Kaleida Health, as announced by 1199SEIU United Workers East on Thursday evening.
This contract, effective until May 31, 2028, follows three days of voting and was established after the unions reached a tentative agreement with Kaleida Health on July 8, thereby averting a potential strike vote.
According to the union's announcement, 94% of 1199SEIU members and 79.5% of CWA members voted in favor of the new contract. The agreement includes a structured wage increase, featuring a 3% raise in the first year, another 3% in the second year, and a 4% increase in the third year.
Cori Gambini, a registered nurse and president of CWA Local 1168, expressed confidence in the contract's provisions, stating it not only offers competitive wages and benefits but also enhances staffing conditions. The contract includes specific language aimed at enforcing agreed-upon staffing ratios. Coupled with New York State's staffing law, these improvements are expected to create better working environments for union members and ensure quality care for the community. Gambini believes this agreement solidifies Kaleida Health's position as a leading employer in Western New York.
Cheryl Marino, an administrative organizer for 1199SEIU and the chief negotiator, conveyed excitement for the union members, highlighting that this three-year contract was achieved without any concessions. Marino emphasized that the deal includes robust wages and benefits, reinforcing the healthcare workforce in the region. The enhancements in staffing and accountability reflect a commitment to making Kaleida Health a premier workplace in Western New York. The efforts made since March 4 have paved the way for continued high-quality care for the community.
