Explore the Perfect Buffalo Weekend: A Curator's Guide

As a proud resident of New York City, I always look forward to welcoming friends and family to Buffalo. There's something special about sharing the local gems that reflect the city's rich history and vibrant culture, making it feel like home.

On Day 1, kick off your exploration with a visit to Unapologetic Coffee, located at 1375 Main St. This coffee shop, owned by Black women and deeply committed to sustainability, offers a cozy atmosphere filled with community spirit. Just a couple of miles away, Elmwood Avenue awaits, lined with charming Victorian shops, delightful restaurants, cafes, and even museums! Begin your journey at the Burchfield Penney Art Center at 1300 Elmwood Ave. As a curator there, I take great pride in showcasing a variety of exhibitions and artists, as well as the captivating watercolor landscapes of Charles Burchfield. Don’t forget to grab a warming bowl of soup at the museum’s Roux Soup Bar and Cafe.

Next, cross the street to the Buffalo AKG Art Museum at 1285 Elmwood. Wander through the new exhibits housed in the stunning three-story glass Gundlach building. Take a leisurely walk across the curvy, windowed bridge leading to the original gallery, established in 1905, where you can appreciate the historical significance of the campus and its internationally acclaimed collection.

Venture outside to admire the impressive AKG murals that adorn buildings throughout the city. Be sure to visit the Freedom Wall at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and East Ferry Street in East Buffalo, which features portraits honoring local and national African American pioneers. From there, continue your journey for another two miles to the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor. Here, you can uncover the stories of Buffalo's musical legends, including Aretha Franklin, and visit the historic 1845 church founded by freedom fighters. Don’t miss the opportunity to tour the house museum of a minister who played a key role in establishing the local NAACP.

Looking for dinner and drinks? My go-to spot on Connecticut Street is a must-visit. Enjoy a unique milkshake cocktail, along with sweet potato fries and a fried chicken sandwich, as well as a variety of vegan options at Mister Sizzles, located at 346 Connecticut. Just a block away, you’ll find Southern Junction at 365 Connecticut, known for its award-winning Indian-fusion barbecue.

On Day 2, start your morning with a delightful cup of coffee at Golden Cup Coffee, situated at 1323 Jefferson Ave. This Black-owned cafe offers a taste of home with grits that remind you of grandma’s cooking, all while being nestled in a historic African American neighborhood. Nearby landmarks include the Challenger Community News, established in 1963, which publishes weekly papers, and the Frank E. Merriweather Library. Don’t forget to stop by the Tops supermarket at 1275 Jefferson, where you can pay tribute at a memorial honoring the victims of the tragic massacre on May 14, 2022.

Just down the street at 1382 Jefferson, you’ll find Zawadi Books, a community treasure for nearly half a century, named after the Swahili word for “gift.” A short six-minute drive will take you to another favorite of mine: Fitz Books and Waffles at 433 Ellicott St. Here, you can enjoy delicious Belgian-style waffles while browsing books that uncover hidden histories and inspire us to make a difference.

For a quick getaway, Niagara Falls is only about a 30-minute drive away. Don’t miss the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center at 825 Depot Ave., where you can learn about the courageous freedom fighters who aided individuals escaping from slavery, guiding them to safety across the bridge in Canada. This museum serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history that surrounds us.

As the sun begins to set, make your way to Buffalo’s waterfront, where the views are nothing short of breathtaking. Canalside, a vibrant downtown park along the historic Erie Canal, features the Buffalo Heritage Carousel, a beautifully restored merry-go-round that dates back a century. To wrap up your day, unwind with dinner and drinks at Deco Lounge, located at 69 Delaware Ave. This chic bar serves up delectable small plates and cocktails, often accompanied by live music to enhance your evening.

The journey through Buffalo is filled with culture, history, and unforgettable experiences that truly capture the essence of this remarkable city.
