Discover the Perfect Buffalo Weekend: Curator's Top Picks!

As someone who grew up in New York City, I take great pleasure in showing friends and family around Buffalo. I love introducing them to cherished spots that highlight the city's dynamic history and culture, which make Buffalo feel like home.

On Day 1, kick off your exploration with a visit to Unapologetic Coffee, located at 1375 Main St. This cozy coffee shop, founded by Black women with a commitment to sustainability, offers a welcoming atmosphere that celebrates culture and community. Just a couple of miles away lies Elmwood Avenue, a vibrant area filled with charming shops, restaurants, cafes, and museums. Start your museum journey at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, at 1300 Elmwood Ave. As a curator there, I take pride in showcasing diverse exhibitions and artists, alongside the rich history of Charles Burchfield and his captivating watercolor landscapes. Be sure to grab a comforting bowl of soup at the museum’s Roux Soup Bar and Cafe.

Cross the street to explore the Buffalo AKG Art Museum at 1285 Elmwood. Here, you can wander through the contemporary exhibits housed in the striking new three-story Gundlach building, and then follow the curvy bridge to the original 1905 gallery, where you can appreciate the historic campus and its internationally acclaimed collection.

Step outside and take a stroll to view the AKG-commissioned murals adorning buildings throughout the city. Don’t miss the Freedom Wall, located at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and East Ferry Street in East Buffalo, which honors the contributions of local and national African American trailblazers. From there, continue your journey for two more miles to the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor. Here, you can discover stories of musicians linked to Buffalo, including Aretha Franklin, visit the 1845 church and refuge established by freedom fighters, and tour the house museum of the minister who played a key role in founding the local NAACP.

For dinner and drinks, I recommend heading to Connecticut Street. At Mister Sizzles, 346 Connecticut, indulge in a delightful milkshake cocktail, crispy sweet potato fries, and a fried chicken sandwich, with plenty of vegan options available. Just a block away, at 365 Connecticut, you’ll find Southern Junction, where their award-winning Indian-fusion barbecue is not to be missed.

On Day 2, start your morning with a delicious brew at Golden Cup Coffee, found at 1323 Jefferson Ave. This Black-owned coffee shop is situated in a historic African American neighborhood and serves up grits that taste just like grandma used to make. Nearby, you can visit landmarks such as the Challenger Community News, established in 1963, and the Frank E. Merriweather Library. Don’t forget to stop by the Tops supermarket at 1275 Jefferson to pay your respects at the memorial for those lost in the tragic events of May 14, 2022.

Just down the street at 1382 Jefferson, Zawadi Books, which translates to “a gift” in Swahili, has been a beloved community resource for nearly 50 years. A short six-minute drive will take you to another favorite of mine: Fitz Books and Waffles, located at 433 Ellicott St. Enjoy their Belgian-style waffles while browsing books that uncover hidden histories and inspire change.

For a little adventure, make the 30-minute drive to Niagara Falls and visit the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, located at 825 Depot Ave. This museum tells the powerful stories of the freedom fighters who assisted enslaved individuals in their escape to safety across the Canadian border, reminding us of the rich history that surrounds us.

As the day transitions into evening, head to Buffalo’s waterfront, where the sunsets are nothing short of spectacular. Canalside, a lively park and promenade along the historic Erie Canal, features the Buffalo Heritage Carousel, a beautifully restored merry-go-round from a local factory that once thrived a century ago. To conclude your day, relax with dinner and drinks at Deco Lounge, 69 Delaware Ave. This trendy bar offers a menu of small plates and cocktails, often accompanied by live music.
