Discover the Perfect Buffalo Weekend with a Curator!

As someone who hails from New York City, I find immense joy in welcoming friends and family to Buffalo. I love to share the city's rich history and vibrant culture through familiar favorites that truly embody what makes Buffalo feel like home.
Day 1 kicks off with a caffeine boost at Unapologetic Coffee, located at 1375 Main St. This Black women-owned coffee shop emphasizes sustainability and offers a cozy atmosphere filled with community spirit. Just a short two-mile stroll will lead you to Elmwood Avenue, a picturesque neighborhood adorned with Victorian-era homes, eclectic shops, delightful eateries, and even museums! Begin your exploration at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, situated at 1300 Elmwood Ave. As a proud curator here, I celebrate our diverse exhibitions and the captivating history of Charles Burchfield, whose watercolor landscapes seem to come alive. For a comforting meal, you can grab a delicious bowl from the Roux Soup Bar and Cafe within the museum.
Afterward, cross the street to visit the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, located at 1285 Elmwood. Take a leisurely stroll through the innovative exhibits housed in the striking three-story Gundlach building. Don’t miss the chance to traverse the curvy, windowed bridge that connects to the original 1905 gallery, where you can appreciate the historic campus and our esteemed international collection.
Once outside, immerse yourself in the vibrant art scene by exploring the murals commissioned by AKG that adorn buildings throughout various neighborhoods in the city. A highlight is the Freedom Wall, located at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and East Ferry Street in East Buffalo, featuring portraits that honor both local and national African American pioneers. Continue your journey for another two miles to the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor. Here, you can uncover the impactful stories of musicians with ties to Buffalo, such as Aretha Franklin, and visit the historic 1845 church built by freedom fighters, as well as the house museum of a minister who played a pivotal role in establishing the local NAACP.
When it comes to dinner and drinks, my go-to spot is Connecticut Street. Stop by Mister Sizzles at 346 Connecticut for a mouthwatering milkshake cocktail, sweet potato fries, and their famous fried chicken sandwich, along with a variety of vegan options. Just a block away at 365 Connecticut, be sure to try Southern Junction, renowned for its award-winning Indian-fusion barbecue.
Day 2 begins with a delightful coffee experience at Golden Cup Coffee, located at 1323 Jefferson Ave. Situated on an iconic street rich with African American heritage, this Black-owned café serves up grits that remind you of home-cooked meals from grandma’s kitchen. Nearby, landmarks such as the Challenger Community News, established in 1963, and the Frank E. Merriweather Library add to the area's significance. Don't forget to visit the Tops supermarket at 1275 Jefferson, where a memorial honors the Buffalonians lost in the tragic massacre on May 14, 2022.
A short distance away at 1382 Jefferson, you’ll find Zawadi Books, a beloved community bookstore named after the Swahili word for "a gift," which has served the neighborhood for nearly 50 years. Just a six-minute drive will take you to another favorite of mine: Fitz Books and Waffles at 433 Ellicott St., where you can enjoy scrumptious Belgian-style waffles while browsing through books that inspire us to uncover hidden histories and become catalysts for change.
For a memorable excursion, take a 30-minute drive to the stunning Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center at 825 Depot Ave. This museum beautifully narrates the stories of freedom fighters who aided individuals escaping slavery towards safety in Canada, reminding us of the rich history that surrounds us.
As the day transitions into evening, head to Buffalo’s waterfront, where the sunsets paint the sky with mesmerizing hues. Canalside, a vibrant downtown park along the historic Erie Canal, features the Buffalo Heritage Carousel, a beautifully restored merry-go-round that dates back a century. To wrap up the day, enjoy dinner and drinks at Deco Lounge, located at 69 Delaware Ave. This chic bar offers delectable small plates, refreshing cocktails, and occasionally live music to enhance your experience.
