Discover the Perfect Buffalo Weekend: A Curator's Guide!

As a proud native of New York City, I always relish the opportunity to show my friends and family the charm of Buffalo. This city is rich in history and culture, and I love introducing my visitors to the local spots that make Buffalo feel like home.

Day 1 kicks off with a perfect pick-me-up at Unapologetic Coffee, located at 1375 Main St. This coffee shop, owned by Black women and focused on sustainability, radiates a welcoming vibe infused with culture and community spirit. Just a couple of miles down the road lies Elmwood Avenue, a picturesque street lined with Victorian-style shops, eateries, and museums. Begin your exploration at the Burchfield Penney Art Center at 1300 Elmwood Ave. As a curator there, I take pride in the diverse range of exhibitions and the captivating watercolor landscapes of Charles Burchfield, which seem to come alive. You can also warm up with a delicious bowl of soup at the museum's Roux Soup Bar and Cafe.

Afterward, cross the street to visit the Buffalo AKG Art Museum at 1285 Elmwood. Take a leisurely stroll through the new exhibits housed in the striking three-story glass cube of the Gundlach building. You can follow the curvy, windowed bridge to the original 1905 gallery and soak in the beauty of the historic campus and its internationally acclaimed collection.

Step outside to discover the stunning murals commissioned by the AKG that adorn the buildings throughout the neighborhoods. Don’t miss the Freedom Wall, a powerful display of portraits honoring both local and national African American leaders, located at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and East Ferry Street in East Buffalo. For those eager to delve deeper, continue for another two miles to the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor. Here, you’ll uncover the rich stories of musicians with ties to Buffalo, including the legendary Aretha Franklin. Visit the church built in 1845 by freedom fighters and the house museum of the minister who played a key role in establishing the local NAACP.

As the day winds down, head to Connecticut Street for dinner and drinks. My go-to is Mister Sizzles, situated at 346 Connecticut, where you can savor a milkshake cocktail, sweet potato fries, a fried chicken sandwich, and plenty of vegan options. Just a block away at 365 Connecticut, don’t overlook Southern Junction and its award-winning Indian-fusion barbecue.

Day 2 begins with a delightful cup of coffee at Golden Cup Coffee, located at 1323 Jefferson Ave, right in the heart of a historic African American neighborhood. This Black-owned establishment serves grits that taste like they came straight from grandma’s kitchen. The area is home to notable landmarks such as the Challenger Community News, which has been publishing weekly since 1963, and the Frank E. Merriweather Library. While you’re there, stop by the Tops supermarket at 1275 Jefferson to pay your respects at the memorial honoring the victims of the tragic May 14, 2022, massacre.

Just a short walk away at 1382 Jefferson is Zawadi Books, a beloved community hub for nearly five decades, with a name that means “gift” in Swahili. If you’re up for a quick drive, I highly recommend Fitz Books and Waffles at 433 Ellicott St., where you can enjoy delicious Belgian-style waffles while browsing books that inspire change and uncover hidden histories.

For a memorable outing, take a 30-minute drive to Niagara Falls and visit the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center at 825 Depot Ave. This museum recounts the courageous tales of freedom fighters who aided those escaping slavery, leading them to safety across the border in Canada. It’s a powerful reminder of the significant history that surrounds us.

As the afternoon transitions into evening, make your way to Buffalo’s waterfront, where the sunsets create a breathtaking backdrop. Canalside, a lively downtown park along the historic Erie Canal, features the Buffalo Heritage Carousel, a beautifully restored merry-go-round from a century ago. To conclude your day, unwind at Deco Lounge, located at 69 Delaware Ave, where you can enjoy a selection of small plates and cocktails, often accompanied by live music.

The experience of exploring Buffalo is truly one to cherish, filled with rich history, vibrant culture, and unforgettable culinary delights.
