Empowering New York's Semiconductor Supply Chain: Bridging the Gap

Recently, the University at Buffalo hosted the "Bridging the Gap: Activating the Semiconductor Supply Chain Network" conference, where industry leaders, manufacturers, and regional stakeholders gathered for an engaging two-day dialogue aimed at enhancing New York's role in the global semiconductor landscape. This event took place on July 15-16, at the UB Center for the Arts and Alfiero Center, offering a rich mix of insights, networking opportunities, and strategic discussions focused on activating the supply chain and preparing the industry for future challenges.

Key Highlights from the Conference

Over the two-day event, participants had the chance to connect with representatives from prominent companies such as Micron, Moog, and Edwards Vacuum. The sessions covered essential topics, including the quality standards necessary for semiconductor suppliers, navigating federal and state procurement processes, financing business expansions, and contributing to domestic chip production.

Organized by UB’s Center for Supply Chain Analytics and the NY SMART I-Corridor, this conference underscored the region's pivotal role in shaping the future of semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. According to Ajay Balan, Senior Manager of Silicon Planning at Micron Technology, "The United States is making a comeback in semiconductor production."

Collaboration at the Forefront

A standout moment during the conference was the session on the NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub and GO-SEMI, where BNP President and CEO Dottie Gallagher joined fellow regional leaders to discuss the significant advancements stemming from their Regional Tech Hub efforts. The panel emphasized how coordinated initiatives across Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse are already fostering infrastructure investments, industry collaborations, and workforce development. Gallagher highlighted the strength of regional partnerships and the extensive efforts underway to connect employers with emerging opportunities.

Benefits for Employers

In addition to the valuable information shared, the conference featured Lightning Round Buyer Needs Talks, one-on-one supplier meetings, and specialized sessions on government contracting. These provided businesses with a clearer understanding of the current landscape and upcoming opportunities. Presentations from Edwards Vacuum, Moog, and GDI shed light on specific sourcing requirements.

  • Edwards Vacuum is in search of materials like sheet metal, aluminum and iron castings, piping, and tubing.
  • Moog is looking for suppliers of precision machining and electronic components.
  • GDI emphasized the importance of facility services, particularly contamination control in clean rooms critical to semiconductor manufacturing.

The underlying message was clear: the semiconductor supply chain is intricately connected and presents exciting opportunities for businesses in Buffalo Niagara to engage.
