Boosting New York's Semiconductor Supply Chain at Bridging the Gap

The University at Buffalo recently hosted the "Bridging the Gap: Activating the Semiconductor Supply Chain Network" conference, which brought together industry leaders, manufacturers, and regional stakeholders for a dynamic two-day event focused on enhancing New York’s role in the global semiconductor market. Taking place on July 15-16 at the UB Center for the Arts and Alfiero Center, the conference provided participants with invaluable insights, networking opportunities, and strategic discussions aimed at energizing the supply chain and preparing the industry for future demands.

Conference Highlights

Over the two-day event, attendees engaged with representatives from notable companies such as Micron, Moog, and Edwards Vacuum. Discussions centered on crucial topics, including the quality standards necessary for semiconductor suppliers, navigation through federal and state purchasing procedures, financing for business expansion, and strategies for participating in domestic chip production.

Organized by UB’s Center for Supply Chain Analytics in collaboration with the NY SMART I-Corridor, the conference underscored the region's pivotal role in the resurgence of U.S. semiconductor production. Ajay Balan, Senior Manager of Silicon Planning at Micron Technology, emphasized the country's comeback in this vital sector.

BNP's Involvement

A standout session featured BNP President and CEO Dottie Gallagher, who participated in a panel alongside other regional leaders to discuss the significant advancements stemming from the Regional Tech Hub initiative. The panel revealed how collaborative efforts across Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse are fostering infrastructure investments, industry partnerships, and workforce development.

Benefits for Employers

Participants not only gained valuable information but also engaged in Lightning Round Buyer Needs Talks and one-on-one supplier meetings. These sessions offered businesses a clearer understanding of the semiconductor landscape and forthcoming opportunities. Presentations from Edwards Vacuum, Moog, and GDI provided direct insights into specific sourcing needs.

  • Edwards Vacuum is in search of materials such as sheet metal, aluminum, and iron castings, piping, and tubing.
  • Moog is looking for suppliers of precision machining and electronic components.
  • GDI highlighted its facility services, particularly contamination control in clean rooms, which is crucial for semiconductor manufacturing.

The overarching message was clear: the semiconductor supply chain is intricately connected, presenting exciting opportunities for businesses in the Buffalo Niagara region to engage.
