Conference Highlights

During the two-day event, attendees had the chance to connect with representatives from leading companies such as Micron, Moog, and Edwards Vacuum. The sessions covered essential topics including quality standards for semiconductor suppliers, navigating federal and state procurement processes, financing business expansions, and contributing to domestic chip production. Hosted by UB’s Center for Supply Chain Analytics in collaboration with the NY SMART I-Corridor, the conference showcased the region's expanding influence in America's semiconductor landscape.

Ajay Balan, Senior Manager of Silicon Planning at Micron Technology, noted, “The United States is making a comeback in semiconductor production.”

A Spotlight on Local Leadership

One of the standout sessions featured Dottie Gallagher, President and CEO of BNP, who joined other regional leaders in discussing the advancements made through the Regional Tech Hub initiative. This panel highlighted how coordinated efforts among Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse are fueling investments in infrastructure, fostering industry partnerships, and enhancing workforce development.

Gallagher emphasized the importance of regional collaboration, detailing initiatives aimed at connecting employers with opportunities in the semiconductor sector.

Opportunities for Employers

Beyond the informative sessions, the conference offered Lightning Round Buyer Needs Talks and one-on-one supplier meetings, which enabled businesses to gain insights into the semiconductor landscape and potential opportunities. Presentations from Edwards Vacuum, Moog, and GDI provided specific information about sourcing needs:

  • Edwards Vacuum is seeking materials such as sheet metal, aluminum, iron castings, piping, and tubing.
  • Moog is looking for suppliers of precision machining and electronic components.
  • GDI emphasized the importance of facility services, particularly contamination control in clean rooms essential for semiconductor manufacturing.

The overarching message was clear: the semiconductor supply chain is highly interconnected, presenting exciting prospects for businesses in the Buffalo Niagara region to engage.
